Our topic this year!

This year we have decided to have the United States of America as our topic.

These are some of the things we have already discovered about the USA:

  • The Statue of Liberty was given to the USA by the French.
  • The White House is 211 years old.
  • The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong (an American).
  • Barack Obama got over 60 million votes in the Presidential election.
  • Barack Obama is the 44th President of the USA.
  • Barack Obama is 51 years old.
  • George Washington was the first President.
  • Two planes were crashed into the Twin Towers on 11th September 2001.
  • America is famous for producing lots of fast food.

These are some of the things we want to find out about the USA:

  • Why is the USA called the USA?
  • Why has the flag got stars and stripes?
  • What gadgets are made in America?
  • Why did the French give the Statue of Liberty to the USA?
  • What is the largest theme park in the USA?
  • Why did the name change from New Spain to the USA?
  • Why is fast food so popular in America?
  • Who was the 2nd President?
  • Who went to space with Neil Armstrong?

  1. I can tell you that the best theme park is called ceder point and its about an hour from my house in Ohio!!
I expect fast food is so because it is filling and very cheap to buy, to get groceries at a store out here is very expensive.
I am so happy to see all this productive work going on and I am looking forward to reading more 🙂
    Take care everyone.
    Miss Hudson 🙂

  2. I have really enjoyed reading your blog! I can help with one of your questions. The American flag has 13 stripes because there were 13 colonies (which later became states) when the flag was made. The lady who made the first American flag was called Betsy Ross and she is quite famous in America!
I am looking forward to reading more on your blog and can’t wait to see some pictures!
    from Mrs. Huelin

  3. India has family in Tampa, Florida – her great aunt was a ‘War Bride’. She met her Aunty Dora when she visited us in Dorchester. I wondered who else knows people living in America?
    From Helen (india’s mum)

  4. Emma’s dad and I have friends who live in Tallahassee, Florida called Kyle and Shannon. Kyle is a lecturer at Florida State University and his wife Shannon works as a research scientist there too. I went to high school with Kyle in South Africa before he moved to America. They have a tortoise shell cat called Louie who they take for walks on a lead outdoors (we find this really funny!)

We also have some special friends who live in Hamden, Connecticut called Frank and Miriam. Their children are really very tall and play championship basketball over there. They played for the English basketball team before being spotted by talent scouts over here in the UK. They lead pretty exciting lives over in America. We would love to go and visit all of our friends over there!

To answer one of your questions: Edwin ( Buzz) Aldrin and Michael Collins were also on Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong in space. However, Michael Collins did not descend onto the lunar surface, only Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon.

I think the USA topic this year is fabulous! Have fun and keep us updated on all the new things you learn about America.

  5. You are learning so many wonderful facts about America! And, I am able to help you with a couple questions…

Mrs. Hudson is right, the biggest theme park in America is in Ohio, about an hour from where I live. It is called Cedar Point! Most famiilies in our area of America go there at least once a year. During October they have Hallo-weekends, which is when they turn the entire park into a scarier place to visit.

There are 50 stars on the American flag, one for each of the 50 states.

U.S.A. stands for the United States of America – so to say it quickly we say USA!

The second President of the United States was John Adams. Hopefully, I can come into your classroom to visit soon, and teach you the Presidents Song that I know. Then you can learn all the United States presidents in order!

I am looking forward to reading more! Great job so far!

    Mrs. Gustafson
